How to install GNOME Shell Extensions in Ubuntu 17.10

Ubuntu's plunge into GNOME as a default desktop environment came in as good news along with a pinch of salt. No one would doubt that it confused end users who are used to Unity desktop. The excellent news is GNOME has its advantages over Unity. One of the best features of GNOME that has ever happened is the tons of available GNOME extensions.

GNOME extensions are tiny apps that can change the look & feel of the desktop. It adds handy features to the desktop, and so can make life easier by increasing productivity. By default settings of Ubuntu 17.10, GNOME extensions are not enabled. Let's see how to get it installed and configured.

Installing GNOME extensions in Ubuntu 17.10

To install extensions in GNOME Shell, you can use Firefox or Chrome browser. Before adding extensions to the Browser, you need to first install Chrome GNOME shell in your system that will able to talk to the browser extension. Though it's called Chrome GNOME shell, it works on Firefox as well as Chrome/Chromium Browser.

Step 1) Launch 'Terminal'.

sudo apt install chrome-gnome-shell

Step 2) Next, click on the below link on Firefox or Chrome browser.

Step 3) Click on the link that says, “Click here to install Browser extension.”

That's it! Your system is now ready to install GNOME extensions. Head over to https://extensions.gnome.org/ to start installing extensions!
