How to return a Surface device bought from the Microsoft Store online

You purchased a Surface device from the Microsoft Store online, but after getting your hands on it, the product is not working as intended. So in this situation, you're wondering how to return it to Microsoft in hopes to gain a refund or a new Surface.

Returning is not as easy when compared to just walking into a store and dropping off the defective Surface product. It requires a bit more work on your part, but that's fine because it's not difficult, so just follow the steps we've laid out below.

Bear in mind that you can use these steps for any item purchased via the Microsoft Store. Just make sure it was bought before the last 30 days or else the software giant won't grant a return and you'll be left fisting the wall in your bedroom.

How to return Surface device to Microsoft

First up, you must sign into the Order history page to request a return. Not all items are eligible for a return, but we're 100 percent certain the Surface products are good to go so worry not on that front.

You'll need to follow the instructions on your screen to get a prepaid shipping label to aid in the return of the device. Now, once Microsoft receives the item, they'll make one final inspection to confirm its eligible for a return. They'll either send a replacement Surface or issue a refund right away.

We should point out that not every tends to get a prepaid shipping label. If you've fallen into this unfortunate mess, then we suggest contacting Microsoft Support for additional help.

What about software or digital goods?

It's possible to purchase digital goods from the Microsoft Store. For software such as Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, etc, just uninstall it from you're Windows 10 computer. Do this by pressing the Windows Key + I to launch the Settings app, then venture off to the Apps section, and finally, locate the app and select Uninstall.

The next step is to sign into the Order history page and choose Request a return. The page should let you know if you're eligible for a return. Now, once the return request is accepted, Microsoft will send you a refund.

As for digital goods such as apps, movies, TV shows, and books, downloaded from the Microsoft Store, these aren't refundable unless you live in a state of the country where the laws say they are.
