Solus 4 Fortitude Released, Here is What's New

Today is a big day for the Solus team as the team just hit a significant milestone! The new version Solus 4, code-named Fortitude ('four'titude - see the pun?) got released today. The new version provides a unique experience of the much-appreciated desktop environment Budgie that got an updated set of default applications.

The look and feel of the system have changed, and it also comes with updated hardware support. The changes are explained in detail further below.

What's New in Solus 4

1) General Improvements

Set of New Default Applications:

The new version features:

• Web browser : Firefox 65.0.1
• Office suite: LibreOffice 6.2.1.2
• Multimedia: Rhythmbox 3.4.3 (with toolbar extension)
• Mail client: Thunderbird 60
• Video player :
  • MPV 0.16 (for Budgie and GNOME)
  • VLC 3.0.6 (for MATE)

Hardware and Kernel Updates

Solus 4 has the Linux Kernel 4.20.16, which in itself aims at providing better support for:

• AMD Picasso
• Raven2 APUs
• AMD Vega20 and Vega10
• Intel Coffee Lake and Ice Lake CPUs

The new Kernel version also expands the distribution's support for hardware devices like touchpads, in particular for Lenovo IdeaPad 130-15IKB and 330-15ARR.

Mesa has been upgraded to the latest version, which is good news for gamers. The upgraded version provides support for OpenGL 4.5 API and also for newer AMD Polaris, Vega20, Vega10, and VegaM cards.

Multimedia Upgrades

The release comes with ffmpeg 4.1.1, delivering better quality for VAAPI MPEG and VP8 formats' output. It also enables support for encoding, decoding, and parsing of AOM AV1.

The VLC Player now supports dav1d, an open source AV1 decoder.

Software Center

Minor performance improvements are applied, and several bugs got fixed in the Software Center. Also, The popular office suite WPS Office got deleted due to the introduction of a EULA that cannot get imposed.

2) Budgie

Solus 4 ships with the latest release of Budgie, which is accompanied by a great new GTK theme (Noir) named Plata.

Applets

Application Menu

The application menu had received small refinements that fix some of the older issues of repetition (when a search made), and the 'Sundry' category got deleted and appended to the 'Others' category.

Caffeine Mode

The new version of Budgie comes with a 'Caffeine Mode,' which does not allow the system to suspend or lock when you've had it enabled. Some features of this new applet are:

• Presence of a timer to automatically turn it off
• Setting the system to a specific brightness level when using the mode

Icon Tasklist

New Budgie gives the Icon Tasklist a significant update with improved detection and grouping of the programs and a new pop-over menu.

The new menu enables users to:

• Close all windows of a program
• Control windows easily with tasks like maximizing, minimizing, etc. and quickly move them to different workspaces
• Quickly favorite/unfavorite programs
• Quickly launch a new instance of a program
• Minimize or focus on an application by scrolling down or up (respectively) on the program's Tasklist button
• Toggle minimize or un-minimize between various programs

Additionally, and importantly, it enables users to execute tasks specific to an application right from the Tasklist. For example, the TaskList button of Firefox gives an option to open a new private window without even opening it.

Raven

The widget and notification center of Budgie receives many performance improvements.

Calendar

Week numbers on the Calendar come in handy.

Notifications

The notifications will group according to the program's category. Notifications can now be cleared all at a time, all of one program at a time, or one program at a time.

Notification summaries and descriptions are now efficiently displayed in the pop-up notifications. No notifications for power such as suspend and printers get presented.

Sound

The sound widget has received significant improvements.

• The sound widget now is split into input and output
• The option for 150% volume is now possible
• Controlling the volume from the application is possible and not only for graphical, but also for CLI based music players
• Easy switching between different input and output devices

Personalization

The new release of Budgie features new settings and configuration options for the Budgie Desktop Settings application. Let us go through some of them:

Style

The new configuration for this category enables automatic blacklisting of the themes and icons packs that don't bode well with Budgie. It may seem a bit irrelevant, but this can save your system from a terrible crash, and you from a terrible experience.

A new option to control the location of notification pop-ups is a new feature. The developers have expressed that instead of working more on their “internal” themes, they are trying to provide better support for third-party GTK themes.

Raven

The Raven widgets' improvements include:

• Raising volume above 100%
• Enabling week number in the calendar
• Toggling widgets of :
  • Calendar
  • Sound output
  • Sound input
  • Media Playback Controls
  • Power options

Windows

New settings for windows include:

• Centering windows on the screen
• Disabling Night Mode when a program is full-screen. Automatically turned back when program leaves full screen
• Changing focus to windows with just hovering the cursor over it instead of clicking on it
